TIP

Looking for the actual marketing content — the 4 Ps, selling process, pricing strategies, all 8 knowledge areas? That's in the Complete Study Guide. This page is just the dates, deadlines, and what to do when.

If you're a freshman or sophomore starting the 2026–2027 FBLA year, here's the short version: the rules and content of Introduction to Marketing Concepts haven't changed in any way we can confirm — it's still a 9th/10th-grade-only, 100-question, 50-minute objective test across 8 knowledge areas. What has changed is the calendar. FBLA's 2026–2027 Competitive Events Guidelines went live on fbla.org in early September 2026, and the season now points toward a National Leadership Conference in a new city.

The Short Version

QuestionAnswer
Are the 2026–2027 guidelines out?Yes. FBLA's competitive events pages and guideline PDFs for 2026–2027 were live as of early September 2026.
Has the event format changed? No confirmed changes to Introduction to Marketing Concepts specifically — still 100 questions, 50 minutes, 9th/10th grade only, 8 knowledge areas. Always check the footer date on the official PDF, since FBLA does revise guidelines through the year.
National dues deadlineMarch 1, 2027, 11:59 p.m. Eastern — the national floor. Many states set an earlier deadline; confirm with your chapter adviser now.
2026 NLC (just completed)San Antonio, Texas — June 29 – July 2, 2026
2027 NLCColumbus, Ohio — June 23–26, 2027, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center
State Leadership Conference (SLC) 2027 datesNot nationally fixed — set independently by each state chapter, typically between January and April

What's Confirmed for 2026–2027 (and What Isn't)

Confirmed, based on FBLA's live 2026–2027 competitive events listing:

  • Introduction to Marketing Concepts remains an objective-test-only event, restricted to grades 9 and 10.
  • The event description language FBLA publishes for 2026–2027 is essentially unchanged from prior years: foundational marketing principles, product promotion, pricing strategies, consumer behavior, and selling methods.
  • FBLA's general "Marketing" event (the grades 9–12 role-play alternative) also continues, unchanged in structure — objective test plus a role-play round for top scorers.

Not yet independently confirmed by us for the 2026–2027 cycle specifically (verify against the current PDF before relying on it):

  • The exact 50-minute time limit and 100-question count. These have held steady for at least three consecutive program years (2023–2024 through 2025–2026), so a change would be unusual, but we could not pull the literal 2026–2027 PDF text directly to confirm the footer date. Check the PDF footer yourself — FBLA date-stamps every guideline document.
  • Any mid-year rule clarifications. FBLA does sometimes issue small updates to guidelines after the initial September release.
TIP

The single most reliable way to confirm you're studying current information: open the official guideline PDF, scroll to the bottom, and check the "Updated [Month] [Year]" footer. If it says anything before August 2026, you're looking at last cycle's document.

The Competition Ladder for 2026–2027

Introduction to Marketing Concepts is contested at up to three levels, depending on your state's structure:

  1. Local chapter — some chapters run an internal qualifying round before sending competitors up; check with your adviser.
  2. Region/District (fall/winter, where applicable) — not every state has this layer, and where it exists, dates are set locally.
  3. State Leadership Conference (SLC) — typically held between January and April 2027, exact dates set independently by each state chapter. There is no single national SLC date.
  4. National Leadership Conference (NLC)June 23–26, 2027, in Columbus, Ohio, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Only competitors who place well enough at their SLC advance here; exact state quotas vary.
IMPORTANT

Because SLC dates are set state-by-state, there is no way to give one universal "competition date" for this event. Your state FBLA chapter's website is the only authoritative source for your own SLC date. Search "[your state] FBLA State Leadership Conference 2027" once your state posts it, typically in the fall or winter.

Membership Deadline: What You Actually Need to Know

FBLA's official guidelines state a national eligibility floor of 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on March 1 of the current program year — for the 2026–2027 cycle, that's March 1, 2027. This is the deadline stated directly in the event's own guidelines document.

Here's the part that trips people up: this is a floor, not necessarily your deadline. States and even individual district directors can — and often do — set an earlier internal cutoff for their own qualifying conferences. Florida FBLA, for example, requires dues paid by December 1 (or an earlier date its district director sets) to compete at the district or state level. If you wait until March 1 assuming that's universal, you could miss your own state's much earlier cutoff entirely.

WARNING

Don't wait until spring to check this. Ask your chapter adviser for your specific state and district dues deadline in September or October 2026, not in February 2027. By the time March 1 rolls around nationally, several states have already closed their own earlier registration windows.

NLC 2027: What's Different About Columbus

FBLA selected Columbus, Ohio for the 2027 National Leadership Conference back in 2023, well ahead of the standard multi-year advance-booking cycle major student conferences use. A few practical notes if you're aiming to qualify:

  • Dates: June 23–26, 2027 (compare to 2026's June 29 – July 2 window in San Antonio — note the 2027 conference sits about a week earlier in the calendar, which matters if your family is planning summer travel around it).
  • Venue: Greater Columbus Convention Center.
  • Following years, for context: NLC 2028 is set for Anaheim, California, and NLC 2029 for Indianapolis, Indiana — useful if you're a freshman this year mapping out which conferences you might reach as you move up through FBLA.

A Month-by-Month Plan for the 2026–2027 Season

September–October 2026 (now): Confirm your actual dues deadline with your adviser — don't assume March 1. Start working through the 8 knowledge areas at a relaxed pace; there's no test pressure yet, which makes this the best time to build vocabulary.

November–December 2026: Most region/district-level competitions (where applicable) happen in this window. If your state has this layer, this is your first real test under time pressure — treat it as a diagnostic, not a verdict.

January–March 2027: State Leadership Conference season for most states. This is also when your state will announce its specific SLC date and location if it hasn't already — watch your chapter's communications closely during this window.

April–May 2027: If you've qualified for nationals, this is your final full-length practice window. Run complete 100-question, 50-minute timed simulations under real conditions.

June 23–26, 2027: National Leadership Conference, Columbus, Ohio.

NOTE

Published September 6, 2026, right as FBLA's 2026–2027 competitive events guidelines went live. The National Leadership Conference date and city (June 23–26, 2027, Columbus, Ohio) are corroborated across four independent state FBLA chapter sites plus the original host-city announcement — treat those as solid. The membership deadline follows FBLA's stated multi-year pattern (March 1 of the current program year), but the exact 2026–2027 guideline PDF wording wasn't directly accessible at publish time — if your chapter adviser tells you something different, follow them.
