Junior Secondary School Certification

Basic Education Certificate Examination

The BECE (commonly called Junior WAEC) is Nigeria's exit exam for JSS3 (Basic 9) students, certifying completion of the 9-year Basic Education programme and serving as the gateway to Senior Secondary School (SS1) admission. BECE uses its own 5-level grading scale (A/B/C/P/F) — distinct from the SSCE used for university admission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which class of students sit the BECE?

Students in JSS3 (Junior Secondary School 3, equivalent to Basic 9) sit the BECE as their exit examination from junior secondary education, after completing three years of JSS.

What grades are considered passing in BECE?

BECE uses a 5-level scale: A (Distinction, 70–100), B (Upper Credit, 60–69), C (Lower Credit, 50–59), P (Pass, 40–49), and F (Fail, 0–39). A, B, C, and P are all passing grades. To gain SS1 admission, a candidate needs passes in at least 6 subjects including English and Mathematics.

Is BECE the same as NECO's SSCE?

No. BECE is the junior secondary (JSS3) exit exam. NECO's SSCE is a separate exam taken by SS3 students required for university admission. They are different exams with different grading scales (BECE: A/B/C/P/F; SSCE: A1–F9).

Who conducts the BECE — NECO or WAEC?

Both, depending on the school. NECO conducts BECE for Federal Unity Colleges, Armed Forces Secondary Schools, and NECO-registered private schools. WAEC, in partnership with State Ministries of Education, conducts BECE (often called Junior WAEC) for public and state-approved private schools.

How does Nigeria's BECE differ from Ghana's BECE?

Nigeria's BECE is administered by NECO/WAEC-with-states for JSS3 students under the Nigerian curriculum. Ghana's BECE is a separate examination conducted by the Ghana Education Service (via WAEC Ghana) for JHS3 students under the Ghanaian curriculum. They share a name but are entirely distinct exams.

Can I register for BECE as a private/home-schooled candidate?

No. NECO BECE registration must be done through an approved school. There is no provision for individual or private candidate registration under the current NECO BECE framework.
