CAT Previous Year Papers (2021–2025): Free Mock Tests, PYQs with Solutions & Topic-Wise Practice

Preparing for CAT Previous Year Papers (2021–2025)?

Test your readiness with our free, timed mock exams.

Take a Free Mock Exam

Search "CAT mock test" and you'll get hundreds of results — paywalled coaching-institute samplers, or "free" tests that ask for your phone number by question 5. Free, but not really.

Here are 10 real CAT question papers from 2021–2025 — every slot, every section — that you can actually attempt for free on ExamOven, in an interface built to feel like the actual CBT: countdown timer, question palette, mark-for-review, negative marking. No login. No paywall.

Why an Actual PYQ Beats a Generic "Mock Test"

A "mock test" put together by a coaching institute or an app is somebody's guess at what CAT-level difficulty feels like. A Previous Year Question (PYQ) paper isn't a guess — it's the actual set of 68 questions that showed up in a real exam, in a real slot.

If you're prepping for CAT 2026, there's no better mock series than the last five years of real CAT papers, attempted exactly the way they were administered. That's the whole idea here — no invented questions, just what CAT has actually asked since 2021.

What You Actually Get on ExamOven

There are two ways to practice: take a timed exam, or read through questions at your own pace to actually understand them. Every paper opens into a Configure Session screen first, so practice adapts to
whatever you're working on that day — not one generic test for everyone.

FeatureWhat It Does
Exam-style timerSet your own time limit (default 120 min for a full paper) with a live countdown, just like the real CBT screen.
Negative marking toggleTurn it on to replicate CAT's actual scoring pressure — set it to CAT's real +3 / −1 scheme, or adjust for sectional drills.
Filter by Subject & TopicDrop straight into VARC, DILR, or QA — or drill a single topic like Arithmetic, Geometry, Number System, or Sequence & Series without touching the rest of the paper.
Question PaletteAnswered / Marked / Not Answered / Not Visited — the same navigation logic as the real CAT interface, so palette-reading becomes second nature before exam day.
Question SlicerChop a paper down to a specific range (e.g., Q1–20) for a short, focused session when you don't have 2 hours free.
Study & Understand modeTurn off the clock entirely and read through each question with the answer and full explanation visible — built for learning, not scoring.

All of it is free, works without an account, and your attempt data stays on your device.

The Research Behind Why Timed PYQ Practice Actually Moves Your Score

It's easy to treat mock practice as an afterthought — something you squeeze in once the "real" studying is done. Turns out the research says the opposite: taking practice tests is one of the most effective ways to actually learn the material, not just check what you already know.

  • Practice testing beats re-reading and re-watching notes. In a landmark review of ten learning techniques for the Psychological Science in the Public Interest journal, Dunlosky et al. (2013) rated practice testing as one of only two techniques with "high utility" for durable learning — well above highlighting, re-reading, or summarizing. A 2021 meta-analysis by Hattie and Donoghue, covering 242 studies and over 169,000 participants, found the same thing: distributed practice and practice testing are the two most effective learning techniques measured.
  • The "testing effect" is real and well-replicated. Roediger and Karpicke's foundational 2006 study showed that actively recalling information under test conditions produces stronger long-term retention than simply re-studying the same material — even when the practice test itself isn't scored.
  • Timed practice reduces exam-day anxiety, it doesn't cause it. A 2026 quasi-experimental study (Al-Thani & Akour, International Journal for Research in Education) found that students who took practice tests showed a significant drop in test anxiety over time — and anxiety was negatively correlated with final exam performance. Separately, research by Agarwal et al. (2014) found that regular low-stakes retrieval practice reduced exam anxiety and increased student confidence, rather than adding pressure.

For an exam like CAT — where sections are timed independently, you can't revisit a closed section, and the on-screen palette is unfamiliar the first time you see it — the value isn't just "more questions attempted." It's building enough familiarity with the format itself that your working memory on exam day goes entirely toward solving problems, not figuring out where the "Mark for Review" button is.

Don't Skip the Explanations

Timed attempts build your exam temperament. Reading explanations builds actual understanding. You need both — most free "mock test" sites give you neither, just a score at the end and no way to see why an answer was wrong.

Every question across all 10 papers has a full explanation attached — not just the correct option, but the reasoning behind it. Two ways to use this:

  1. Attempt first, review after — take the paper under timed conditions, then go back through every question (right and wrong) and read the explanation before moving on.
  2. Study & Understand mode — skip the clock entirely and read through a paper section-by-section with explanations visible from the start. Better for a first pass through an unfamiliar topic, or for close reading on DILR sets and RC passages where the reasoning path matters more than the final answer.

You don't need a separate QA-only paper to isolate a section, either — every full paper in the table above can be filtered down to just VARC, just DILR, or just QA using the subject filter on the Configure Session screen. Pick the paper, turn off the sections you don't want, and start.

A Simple Way to Work Through These Ten Papers

  1. Start with 2021 or 2022 in Study & Understand mode. No timer. Read every question and its explanation. This builds pattern recognition before speed matters.
  2. Move to full timed attempts for 2023–2025, negative marking on, in one sitting where possible — 120 minutes, all three sections, no pausing. Treat it like exam day.
  3. Use the topic filter on any paper to isolate and repeat your weakest topics — Geometry, Number System, or Time & Work in QA, or Logical Reasoning sets in DILR, for instance — without re-running the whole paper.
  4. Review every attempt within 24 hours. Go through both right and wrong answers using the explanations, not just the ones you missed. Understanding why a correct answer worked is what actually transfers to a new question next time.
  5. Save your most recent two papers for the final two weeks before your exam, timed exactly to your actual CAT slot, to condition your focus for that specific time of day.

FAQs

Are these official CAT question papers, or are they recreated?

These are previous year question (PYQ) papers reconstructed to match the actual questions asked in each CAT slot, organized by section and topic so you can practice them exactly as they appeared.

Is CAT mock test practice on ExamOven really free?

Yes. All 10 papers listed above are free to attempt, with no login and no paywalled sections. ExamOven doesn't gate explanations or results behind a signup.

Which CAT PYQ should I attempt first?

If you're early in preparation, start with an older paper (2021 or 2022) in Study & Understand mode to build familiarity without time pressure. Save the most recent papers (2024–2025) for timed, full-length attempts closer to your exam.

Does the mock interface include CAT's actual negative marking?

Negative marking is a toggle you control. Set marks per correct answer and the negative-marking penalty to CAT's actual +3 / −1 scheme (0 penalty for TITA/non-MCQ questions) to simulate real scoring pressure, or adjust it for lighter sectional drills.

Can I practice only the specific section?

Yes, every paper can also be filtered down to just its desired section (or any specific topic within that section) using the subject and topic filter.
